Sabrina Offline - First Details. |
|
I have been able to get first detaails on Digital Images forthcoming platform game, Sabrina Offline, even though there is little to show from the game at tyhe moment it is already beginning to sound quite exciting. Below is the announcment off the game from Digital Images.
Based on Characters from the excellent Eric W. Schwartz comic strip "Sabrina Online" Sabrina Offline is a 3D Platform Game unlike any other.
Technology-wise, Sabrina Offline will be great, however we're not going to focus solely on the quality of the graphics engine, the Programmers will - that's their job. The Designers' lives, however, currently revolve around ensuring that the game is as fresh, as fun, as exciting and as true to the comic and it's creator as possible.
Balancing the gameplay is possibly the most important aspect of ensuring this game earns the 'Best Game Ever' tag we're aiming for. The integrity of the Characters is sacrosanct, Sabrina's role in this game isn't coincidental, the essence of the comic will permeate the game as much as is possible without sacrificing the playability.
As soon as we started to design Sabrina Offline, we began learning about the restrictions of working with licensed characters. Eric hasn't imposed any restrictions on us himself, but as Eric fans we are insisting that we don't insult other fans of Sabrina Online by twisting the characters to fit our game.
Crossing media is difficult to do well, but we believe that this game will make a suitable companion to the comic.
To do this, we are approaching the game as if it is an Episode of the Comic, in which Sabrina and some of her friends meet Digital Images and we put them into a game.
We felt that this was the only way to avoid the hackneyed getting-sucked-through-the-screen-then-deciding-to-jump-on- creatures'-heads style "plot".
Because the game acknowledges the fact that the Characters on the screen aren't the "real" ones (the "real" ones are watching you play and making comments), we have been able to implement ideas that wouldn't have fit comfortably otherwise.
Deciding how Sabrina is to destroy her enemies was difficult, and we experimented with several different methods, before eventually choosing Lasers. All violence within the game will be cartoony, there will be no gore and you won't see Amy take her dying breath whilst lying in a pool of her own blood or anything like that.
Six of the Characters are Playable: Sabrina, Amy, Thomas, Tabitha, Carli and Spike, and each one brings her or her own special abilities to the game. There is a Seventh Character, Sheila (who hasn't yet appeared in the Comic), however she is an NPC.
We are doing away with most of the dusty old conventions of videogaming and replacing them with the next set of ideas that will get ripped off by brainless Developers who won't do anything unless someone else has done it first. This includes an exciting new SECRET Level Structure that, to our knowledge, has never been implemented (or perhaps even thought of) before.>
Another convention we've chucked is the one whereby the Designers come up with a few ideas and then repeat them throughout the entire game. In Sabrina Offline, we will be implementing new ideas, characters and monsters with every Level Set, you'll want to complete each Level just to see what we do next.
Trust us when we say you'll never have played a game like this before...
