PPC Gaming - Whats in the Pipeline. |
|
The PPC has been around for quite a long time
now and there has been next to nothing in the games department,
commercially at least. Ok, theres been the odd bit of PPC support in the
Doom, Heretic conversions etc, but there been nothing to make complete
use of what is quite a powerful processor. All this is about to
(hopefully) change though. There are a number of PPC games on the way,
some of which look very exciting, heres just a few of them..
Shogo
You can't not have heard about this, the conversion by Hyperion Software of the excellent PC 3D shooter by Monolith. Shogo is based upon the Lithtech 3D engine which is one of the most advanced around, the porting of this engine will allow further ports of game based on this engine inthe future.
Shogo will be PPC only and will support all major 3D cards through Warp3D, originally, Hyperion were aiming for a 3rd quarter '99 release but it may well slip till later in the year now.
Heretic 2
This is another port that is being done by Hyperion Software. Heretic 2 is the sequel to Heretic & Hexen produced by Activision, the game is based on the highly acclaimed Quake2 engine by ID Software.
Again, it is looking as though this will be another PPC only game, 060 support
is being looked at, however, its looking unlikely. GFX cards will be supported,
like Shogo, through Warp3D. Other features include virtual 3D sound (supported
through AHI) and network-play (internet, modem, LAN). Release is expected to by
Quarter 4 '99.
Wipeout 2097
Another high profile title, this time in production by Digital Images. Everyone knows what this game is about, so I ain't gonna go into that. The game was recently demoed at the World of Amiga show and was pulling in quite a few people. Again, Wipeout2097 looks as though it will be PPC & GFX card only. An AGA version was under consideration but looks unlikely now.
Speeds of 20-25fps on a 603e have been mentioned which is easily fast enough to be playable, it will be interesting to see what can be done on a 604e. The game could be finished in as little as 2 months so we should hopefully see something around autumn time.
Virtual Grand Prix
This won't be released with PPC support, however, I'm informed that it may be
released as a patch afterwards. Details on it are low at the moment.
Claws of the Devil
Probably the first PPC game that was announced, although it doesn't look like its going to be the first to be released. News on this game has been kinda thin on the ground recently, however, it is still being worked on and there will hopefully be some new screenshots available soon. For those of you that don't remember, this is a first person perspective game somewhat similar to the excellent Tomb Raider series.
Titan hope to have the game finished and ready for release for the Computer '99 show in Colonge.
MagicK
Not much detail about this one from Pagen Software (The guys behind Dafel: Bloodline) other then that is a real-time 3D strategic game with Starcraft/Civilization/Quake/Specops tendencies. Pagen are currently aiming the game at PPC & Warp3D only. More news when its available.
Explorer2260
Another game thats been in development for a very long time. Programmed by the World Foundry, this started out as being a 68k game, however, it has now moved on to being PPC only. As you probably know Explorer2260 is going to be a massive space game somewhat similar to Frontier but much bigger and better. A release date for this game is yet to be confirmed so it could be a while before we see anything from it, of course, you'll see it here first.
Maim & Mangle
Another game in development by the World Foundry, this is their shot at a real-time strategy game and if its anything like what they plan it could turn out to be a cracker, the game won't be PPc only, however, it will be supporting it with added features. Again, a release date hasn't yet been confirmed.
Phoenix
Phoenix is 3D space combat game with a massive Adventure element. This game will include full PPC support alongside ther 68k support. This is another game that has been delayed quite a lot, things have been quiet with it lately, the authors are doing there best to make it the best 3D space game on the Amiga ever and judging by the latest screenshots they could well succeed. Release date unconfirmed.
Enforce
Another game which hasn't had much said about it recently, its still being
developed though and from what I hear you'll be amazed when the latest details
on it are released. The author is managing to get some excellent speeds out of
the engine on just an 060, so the game should really fly on a PPC.
This isn't it though, there are many other games that are either in
development or are planned including Wild Tracks, Zambrosia, Foundation
re-release, Lambda, a number of games from Digital-Images, a number of games
from Delsyd Software, and probably a few others that I completly forgot about
when writing this...
