On the 5th November Amiga PPC owners around the world rejoiced as the latest Aminet readme file had a QuakePPC patch in its listing. On further inspection it did indeed seem to actually be real. A professional looking readme 'supposedly' written by clickBOOM made things look even more like clickBOOM had finally come to their sences. How wrong could we be....
The patch, was infact, completly illegal. ClickBOOM paid no part whatsoever in
its production and had no idea about it being uploaded to Aminet until it was
there. It would seem that some 'fool' thought it would be funny to upload an
old version of an illegal PPC patch under an official banner. Sadly though,
this peice of stupidity could have some dramatic concequences.
ClickBOOM have now said that because of this there is absolutly no chance that they will be releasing a PPC version of Quake, this was announced on their webpage soon after the illegal upload had been detected (Although it has now been removed, what was actually written on their page can be found at the bottom of this article) . Ever since rumours started circulating that a PPC version would be made, PPC owners have been hanging on tenderhocks waiting for it. They have been given excuse after excuse by clickBOOM and now finally it would seem clickBOOM have gone the whole hog and completly dismissed any chance of one being released. A shame but not really a massive surprise...
It has been suggested by some that clickBOOM have mearly been just waiting for an excuse to cancel Quake PPC, and that this has now come along in the aformentioned form. It has even been said that clickBOOM actually uploaded the patch themselves or had something to do with it so they could use it as an excuse, this one seems very far fetched to me but you never know. How much truth there is to these only clickBOOM can answer, one thing is for sure though, they most certainly haven't made any friends with this announcement.
Hopefully clickBOOM will set the records straight very soon. There have been a lot of rumours flying around, some have even said that an official QuakePPC has been written but clickBOOM refuse to publish it. There are questions that only clickBOOM can answer and I will endevour to get them answered for you.
Hopefully I will have more news soon, maybe there is still time to get clickBOOM to change their minds.
Come on clickBOOM, let everyone know the real story....
Here is what was written on the clickBOOM page shortly after the upload was found:-
