Yet another difficult for Amiga themselves and the users passes by and yet more people loose confidence in a company which is described by some as some sort of sick soap opera.
The parting of company between Amiga and both Jim Collas and Bill McEwan has left many beginning to wonder what the hell is going on. Its just something that doesn't happen, 2 top execitives in a company that are on the verge of releasing what they hope to be a landmark machine resigning. Theres got to be something more behind it, something more that the world isn't being told. Ok, top companies don't usually release informaton on why people leave - its not standard practice, however, something like this reallty does deserve an explantion.
This isn't something that I expect to see from McEwan or Collas as they are probably under some agreement which prevents them from giving details on why they left which means its upto Gateway, at the moment they are in a postition where they have lost all trust, not just of the Amiga users but of anyone that has seen what is going on with them.
Collas was a man that really seemed that he wanted the new Amiga to succeed, he had done a hell of a lot to build up a team that really looked like they could produce something big. Ok, a lot of people didn't like the linux decision (me included), however, many still remained positive about the machine, however with both Collas and McEwan leaving things don't look so good anymore.
Maybe i'm over-reacting here, maybe the leaving of these two from the company won't have any effect whatsoever, maybe the new Amiga will still be released and be a hugh success, however, I still remain sceptical myself.
Lots of people have been saying that the reason for Collas leaving was because he had given too much inormation out, he had told too many people about information that Gateway themselves wanted kept quiet, especially the part about Transmeta being the CPU. If this is true is anyones guess, however, it seems somewhat unlikely as Gateway must have known they he planned for this information to be made public.
And as for Bill McEwan, he has been quoted as saying that 'He didn't leave Amiga, Amiga left him'. Make of that what you will but it doesn't sound too good in my opinion.
Will the Amiga ever actually get released? Will it be a success? Well, there are things that only time will answer, however, all of this does make you wonder, is the Amiga curse going to strike again?
